The Fundamentals of WordPress and How to Set Up Your Web Site to Make Money

Location: UNLV Student Union Meeting Room 205 (Parking is free in front of the Student Union on Saturdays)
1) Installing WordPress using your hosting account to create your web site (we will utilize GoDaddy as an example)
2) WordPress Navigation Basics – Creating Pages, Posts, and Links
3) Selecting themes to create the feel and look for your web site brand
4) Learning how to utilize Widgets
5) Installing images & graphics
6) WordPress Plugins – Make your site dynamic with the power of Plugins
7) Learning how to accept credit cards on your web site via PayPal
Please note that you do not need any prior web development experience to learn how to create your web site through this course. This course is for beginners to web development and for anyone that would like to create their own web site even without any prior web development experience. Please also note that learning how to set up your web site to make money does not guarantee that you will make money. Please bring a paper and pen to take notes. Bringing a laptop is recommended but not necessary.

What is WordPress? WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL which runs on a Web hosting service. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet's "top 1 million" websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, powering over 60 million websites worldwide, including UNLV's web architecture.
About the Instructor: Aaron Sahagun has been developing web sites since 1998 (since he was 14). He graduated high school from a technical institute in Los Angeles where he majored in Computer Science. He then went on to major in Business Administration at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and completed his bachelor of science degree in business while also continuing to study computer science on his own. After graduation from UC Berkeley, Aaron founded Alumwire, Inc. where he managed corporate networking events during the early days of the Company in Berkeley, CA. He drove the Company’s strategic direction, business development, technical activity and marketing activities as its CEO. Aaron has been named by BusinessWeek as one of "The Top 25 Young Entrepreneurs." Aaron has been also featured on NBC, CBS and CNET. The initial sales of $100K+ from Alumwire’s Fortune 500 beta clients led to a $1.4 million dollar financing round. Aaron successfully exited Alumwire in 2011. Since Alumwire, Aaron started a Company called Las Vegas Revealed where he manages events as well as helps develop and power several WordPress web sites for Companies in Las Vegas and outside of Las Vegas.
